Just read Ralph Pyle's comments about the school in 1954. For
your information I was president of the Student's Council in
1954. I was in Grade 13.
Just a comment about the Initiation Dance in 1954. It had to
be cancelled because of Hurricane Hazel. It went late into
the afternoon before we had enough information about the severity
of the storm to realize we had to cancel it.
Grade 13 classroom was at the west end of the hall so we had
the advantage of an entrance way by our classroom.
My father, Nelson Smith was also on the School Board and he
planted the grass around the new school in the fall of 1954.
There is an interesting story about the construction of the
school. In the early 50's it was a joint school board with
Stouffville.
Both schools were small and outdated. As the board worked
out plans for a new school the decision was taken to construct
one larger school near Dickson Hill. Somehow at the last
minute
Stouffville
opted to go their own way and so the new Markham High School
was built on Church Street.
